By removing so many functions, Evernote is in danger of becoming a just another syncing notebook. Anything that came into my purview that I thought I may need to reference again was easily stored in Evernote.īy getting rid of these features and reducing it to a note taking app only puts them in a position where they are competing with Google and Apple, plus the other apps that the article mentioned with better free offerings for the casual user. I always told everyone that it was one of the most useful things that I've ever owned. Photos, files, voice memos, you name it, could be stored and synced to all of your devices. It truly was "a filing cabinet for your brain." Any scrap of information that you thought you may need again could be easily put into Evernote, via a clipper, email, a watch folder or something very easily. What made Evernote great was how easy it was to get information into it.
To me, the issue about getting rid of the "power user" features is that they are what differentiates Evernote from the rest of the note taking apps. And there’s an apparently sizable number of passionate users -and VC money- who see a lot of value in these features, considering what we’ve seen with Roam, Obsidian, and (sort of) Notion. Those seem like relatively easier feature additions. But then again, if they had, it’s likely the product would have become more and more optimized for “enterprise,” and maybe eventually left the consumer market entirely.īut I really think they’re leaving a lot of low-hanging customers on the the tree, so to speak, by not adding bidirectional note linking and native note maps. It’s a shame they couldn’t get traction in the business market. Even then, I wouldn’t bet there’s enough customers in that segment to be secure long term.
If Evernote wanted to keep making a product for power users (and keep the wide platform coverage), I would guess it’d have to be much more expensive than even Devonthink and other super-niche products. Meanwhile, as the popularity of mobile rose, they ended up with two more platforms they needed to develop first-class applications for.Ĭosts went up and demand and pricing power went dramatically down. The business market, where they rightly saw (I think) a secure future, never clicked for them.Īt the same time “free” alternatives like OneNote, iOS Notes, and now products like Notion - with gobs of venture money and little need for profitability, yet - made the market much tougher on the consumer side.
That Evernote exists at all at this point is a minor miracle. This all makes sense from a product strategy perspective, at least looking in from the outside.
